On Tuesday, Time Magazine named former President Donald Trump as its Person of the Year for 2024. This marks the second time Trump has received this recognition, the first being in 2016 after his historic presidential win.
To celebrate the honor, President-elect Trump rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange. Speaking about his recognition, he said:
"Time Magazine—getting this honor for the second time—I think I like it better this time, actually."
Time's History of Recognitions
Since 1927, Time Magazine has annually recognized a person, group, or concept that has made the most significant impact on the world in the past 12 months. Previous honorees include Taylor Swift (2023), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the "Spirit of Ukraine" (2022), and Elon Musk (2021).
This year, Trump emerged as the winner from a shortlist of 10 notable candidates, including:
- Vice President Kamala Harris
- Princess of Wales Kate Middleton
- Tech billionaire Elon Musk (Person of the Year 2021)
- Russian economist Yulia Navalnaya
- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
- U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell
- Podcaster Joe Rogan
- Mexico’s first female president Claudia Sheinbaum
- Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg
Why Donald Trump Was Chosen?
For 97 years, Time Magazine has honored the most influential individual who shaped the world, for better or worse, and dominated headlines.
According to Time Magazine, selecting the Person of the Year is often a challenge—but not this year. Donald Trump has been a central figure in shaping global politics since his first presidential campaign in 2015. His unexpected win in 2016, his influence on modern conservatism, and his polarizing style of leadership have left an indelible mark on history.
In 2024, Trump continued to dominate headlines. He overcame remarkable challenges, including:
- A sole debate with President Joe Biden in June
- Surviving an assassination attempt at a campaign rally
- And finally, his stunning electoral victory in the presidential race
No other figure has so consistently shaped political discourse and captivated the global stage as Trump.
What Does "Person of the Year" Mean?
Previously called "Man of the Year" or "Woman of the Year" until 1999, the Person of the Year title is awarded by Time Magazine to any individual, group, or concept that has had the most significant influence on the world in the past 12 months—be it for better or worse.
While many world elites have received this recognition, Time is not shy about naming controversial figures. Past honorees have included Adolf Hitler, demonstrating that the title reflects influence, not necessarily virtue.
